The transformation of Széll Kálmán square has brought about a series of functional changes, propelling it to become one of the most bustling squares in Budapest. Its cultural and historical significance extends beyond the square itself, leaving an indelible mark on Budapest and even the entire country. Formerly known as Moscow Square (Moszkva tér), Széll Kálmán square is now a household name for the majority of those who have traversed through Budapest.

The design principles focused on revitalizing the spatial structure and character, striking a harmonious balance between its infrastructural purpose and its role as a true public square, an agora. The end result is a clean, well-organized square, with a clear layout that caters to the needs of approximately 200,000 visitors daily.

A distinctive feature of the design is the linework etched into the pavements, following the natural flow of pedestrians. This linework not only adds artistic flair but also helps delineate functional sub-spaces, flowerbeds, and seating areas.

In order to create a captivating focal point and enhance the microclimate, a striking water feature now graces the square, symbolizing its transformation. Additionally, the square has been populated with new trees and perennial beds, infusing the area with lush greenery, providing much-needed shade, and breathing life into the urban landscape.
